Fixing Interaction to Next Paint (INP) Delays Caused by Third-Party Scripts
How bloated marketing tags, hotjar heatmaps, and chat widgets locked up the browser main thread for 620ms on mobile button clicks, and how web worker offloading restored a sub-50ms green INP score.
With Google officially replacing First Input Delay (FID) with Interaction to Next Paint (INP) in Core Web Vitals, websites can no longer hide behind superficial loading metrics. INP measures real user responsiveness across the entire lifecycle of a session — every button tap, form toggle, and accordion click.
This case study analyzes an enterprise SaaS marketing site whose search rankings dropped after failing Google’s 200ms INP threshold on mobile devices.
Act 1: The Crime Scene (620ms Mobile Click Delay)
Users on Android and mid-range devices experienced perceptible lag when clicking the “Pricing” tab or opening the navigation drawer:
- Field INP Telemetry (Crux 75th percentile): 620ms (Failing red threshold).
- Long Tasks Detected: 14 JavaScript execution blocks exceeding 50ms during user interaction.
- Main Thread Blocking: Over 1,200ms of non-stop CPU activity during initial interaction.
Act 2: Forensic Root Cause (Third-Party Script Greed)
We used Chrome DevTools Performance Profiler with 4x CPU throttling to inspect the call stack when a visitor tapped a filter button:
Task (Duration: 340ms)
├── gtag.js (Google Tag Manager event trigger) ........ 110ms
├── hotjar.js (DOM mutation listener) ................... 95ms
├── hubspot-conversations.js (Chat widget observer) ... 85ms
└── layout / paint ..................................... 50ms
The Problem:
Every tap on the interface was intercepted by 3 third-party analytical observers. Because JavaScript is single-threaded, the browser could not paint the visual feedback of the button click until all 3 tracking scripts finished parsing and serializing the DOM state.
Act 3: The Surgical Fix (Web Worker Offloading & Scheduler API)
Rather than removing necessary marketing tools, we decoupled them from the main UI thread using modern browser scheduling APIs:
1. Offloading Analytics to a Web Worker via Partytown
We configured Partytown to run GTM and analytics off the main thread inside a dedicated Web Worker:
<!-- Offload GTM execution to background web worker thread -->
<script type="text/partytown" src="https://www.googletagmanager.com/gtag/js?id=G-XXXXX"></script>
2. Yielding to the Main Thread via scheduler.yield()
For remaining critical tracking scripts, we broke long execution blocks into micro-tasks, allowing the browser to render button feedback before executing telemetry:
// Ensure UI paints before analytics processing
async function handleClickWithTelemetry(event) {
// 1. Immediately paint active visual state
updateButtonUI(event.target);
// 2. Yield control back to browser rendering engine
if ('scheduler' in window && 'yield' in window.scheduler) {
await window.scheduler.yield();
}
// 3. Process analytics after the visual frame has painted
sendAnalyticsEvent('button_click', { label: event.target.innerText });
}
The Verdict: 48ms Mobile INP
After deploying the Web Worker offloading patch:
- INP plunged from 620ms down to 48ms (92% reduction, solid green zone).
- Main thread blocking tasks dropped from 14 down to 0.
- Google Search Console Core Web Vitals status transitioned from ‘Poor’ to ‘100% Good’ within 21 days.
Struggling with Interaction to Next Paint (INP)?
Third-party scripts don’t have to sabotage your user experience or Google rankings.
Under our “Result-First, Fair-Pay” policy:
- We profile your main thread tasks and isolate the exact scripts causing INP latency for free.
- We offload and schedule scripts without breaking your marketing analytics.
- Pay whatever amount feels fair after your mobile INP enters the green zone.
🔗 Interconnected Engineering Triages & Architecture Mesh:
Infrastructure bottlenecks are rarely isolated. Upstream server performance, database query patterns, and DOM execution are tightly interlocked:
- TCP BBR vs CUBIC: Slashing Mobile Latency and Packet Loss: Overcome cellular packet loss and maintain full transmission bandwidth.
- Validating BreadcrumbList Schema Hierarchy: Establish clear entity silos for Google Knowledge Graph grounding.
- Fixing TTFB > 2.5s on High-Traffic LiteSpeed Servers: Eliminate phantom cookie cache bypass and optimize external worker pools.
Need Direct Implementation on Your Server?
Executing surgical server reconfigurations, database indexing, or JavaScript deferrals on live production environments carries downtime risk if done blindly.
