Resolving 301 Redirect Loops and Canonical Traps on Cloudflare Edge

How conflicting Flexible SSL settings, origin .htaccess rules, and trailing slash mismatches caused 4,000 indexing drops in Google Search Console, and how we resolved the edge handshake in 30 minutes.

A redirect loop (ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS) is one of the most destructive technical failures a webmaster can experience. To human visitors, the browser displays a blank connection failure. To Googlebot, repeated 301 redirects rapidly exhaust your crawl budget, leading to wholesale de-indexation within days.

This teardown deconstructs a multi-language European portal that suffered an acute de-indexing catastrophe following a migration to Cloudflare.

Act 1: The Crime Scene (4,000 URLs Dropped from Google)

Following what should have been a routine DNS switch to Cloudflare, the site owner noticed their organic traffic cratering by 80%.

In Google Search Console, the “Page indexing” report showed 4,120 pages flagged as “Redirect error”:

$ curl -ILs https://client-domain.com/services/ | grep -E "HTTP/|location:"

HTTP/2 301
location: http://client-domain.com/services/
HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently
location: https://client-domain.com/services/
HTTP/2 301
location: http://client-domain.com/services/
# ... repeated 20 times until client connection aborted

Act 2: Forensic Root Cause (The Flexible SSL Trap)

The problem stemmed from a classic mismatch between Cloudflare’s edge proxy encryption mode and the origin server’s Apache rewrite rules:

The Ping-Pong Loop:

  1. Cloudflare was configured to “Flexible SSL”: Cloudflare received the visitor’s request via HTTPS, but forwarded the request to the origin server over plain HTTP (Port 80).
  2. Origin .htaccess Enforced HTTPS: The origin server saw incoming plain HTTP traffic on port 80, and immediately fired a 301 Moved Permanently redirecting the client back to https://client-domain.com/services/.
  3. The Infinite Bounce: Cloudflare received the 301 redirect, re-sent the request to the origin over HTTP, and the cycle repeated infinitely until the browser threw ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS.

Secondary Complication: The Trailing Slash War

The origin CMS required trailing slashes (/services/), but a poorly configured Cloudflare Page Rule was stripping trailing slashes (/services), creating a second, concurrent redirect ping-pong on all internal article links.

Act 3: The Surgical Fix (Full Strict SSL & Transform Rules)

We resolved the handshake loop across edge and origin layers without risking downtime:

1. Elevating Cloudflare to “Full (Strict)” Encryption

We installed a free 15-year Cloudflare Origin CA Certificate directly on the origin server and set Cloudflare’s SSL/TLS encryption mode to Full (Strict). Now, Cloudflare communicates with the origin exclusively over encrypted port 443.

2. Standardizing Trailing Slash Normalization at the Edge

Instead of letting the origin server handle redirect logic, we deployed a Cloudflare URL Rewrite Transform Rule to normalize trailing slashes before requests even touch the origin:

// Cloudflare Transform Rule Expression
(http.request.uri.path ne "/" and not ends_with(http.request.uri.path, "/") and not http.request.uri.path contains ".")
// Action: Rewrite to concat(http.request.uri.path, "/")

3. Sanitizing Origin .htaccess HTTPS Enforcement

We harmonized the origin rewrite rules to recognize Cloudflare’s X-Forwarded-Proto header:

<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
  RewriteEngine On
  RewriteCond %{HTTP:X-Forwarded-Proto} !https
  RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
  RewriteRule ^ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]
</IfModule>

The Verdict: 100% Crawl Recovery

Within 4 hours of deploying the configuration patch:

  • 0 (Zero) redirect loops detected across all 4,120 URLs.
  • Direct single-hop 200 OK responses with TTFB under 32ms.
  • Googlebot resumed full crawling; 95% of de-indexed URLs recovered in GSC within 12 days.

Experiencing SSL or Redirect Anomalies?

Edge routing conflicts destroy crawl efficiency and erode hard-earned organic rankings.

Under our “Result-First, Fair-Pay” policy:

  • We trace your HTTP redirect chains and SSL handshakes for free.
  • We configure edge proxy rules and origin headers surgically without downtime.
  • Pay whatever amount feels fair after your redirect loops are resolved.
